Billie Jean Maguire

Billie J. Cantrell McNabb Maguire, age 95, passed away peacefully at her home on January 10, 2024. She was born on January 19, 1928, in Charleston, West Virginia to the late Oren and Isa Stewart Cantrell. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Ray McNabb; second husband, Edward Maguire; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Colleen Cantrell. Billie was a high school English teacher for 25 years at Charleston High School and Capital High School. During these years, she shared her light with countless students, and she, along with her colleague and best friend, Bonnie Maddox, developed a sophomore humanities curriculum for Charleston High. After retirement, she continued to spread her love to the inner-city children of Charleston by developing a Christian after-school program called CAP. The program ran for years and was a model for other after-school programs in the Kanawha Valley. Billie is survived by her three children, Linda McNabb Hull of Grove City, OH, Nancy McNabb Crossetti (John) of Marstons Mills, MA, Charles R. McNabb, Jr. of Charleston, WV; stepson, Edward Maguire (Diana) of Charleston, WV, and Dennis Maguire (Gene) of Palmetto, FL; grandchildren, Lara Lacey, Cindy Lacey-Hester (Kyle), Anthony Crossetti (Shanna), Matthew Crossetti (Kate), and Adam Crossetti; great-grandchildren Chance Carter, Ireland Hester, Delaney Hester, Johnny Crossetti, and Quinton Crossetti; nieces and nephews, Jane Cantrell Salter (Screven), Beth Cantrell Dismukes (Terry), Jack Oren Cantrell, Jr. (Jan), Carolyn McNabb O’Donnell, and Jim McNabb (Martha). She was a founding member of United Disciples of Christ and played an instrumental part in uniting Boyd Memorial Christian Church with First Christian Church to form UDCC. Billie published a memoir of her life in 2011, “A Time to Love,” by author House Publishing. It is available through Amazon.com. A Celebration of Life will be held on April 27th at 1:00pm at United Disciples of Christ Church at 100 Disciples of Christ Drive, South Charleston..
