Mary Jo Wood Young

Mary Jo Wood Young, 91, of St. Albans went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at her residence. She was born in St. Albans, West Virginia to the late Robert William Wood and Cleopatra Wood. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Robert Edwin Young; daughter Elizabeth Ann “Beth” Fleming; brother, Bill Wood. Mary Jo was a retired schoolteacher from Kanawha County Board of Education having taught 6th Grade at Andrew Heights Grade School, Tornado. She was a graduate of St. Albans High School, class of 1953 and graduate from Morris Harvey College. She was a member of Humphreys Memorial United Methodist Church, Tornado. Surviving are her nieces, Joy Ann Mitchell (Tim) and Pam Hill; son-in-law, Ronald Fleming (Cindy Higginbotham). Also surviving are Mary Jo’s grand dogs, Princess and Harley; great nieces, Kristin Davenport (Michael) and Whitney Williams (Justin); great great nieces, Alexandria, Eliza Mae, Greenlee and great great nephew, Justin Michael; and a host of friends, special cousins, and “Jo’s Girls” Betsy Lightner, Katie Rodgers, Jennifer Rollins, Tanya Summers, Alyssa Hamrick and Aria Hamrick and her honorary family the Burns of 38 years next door. In the words of her cousins, Mary Jo was a Gentle Soul, an animal lover, a welcoming hostess and one of a kind storyteller. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, July 31, 2026 at Humphreys United Methodist Church, 7799 Coal River Road, Tornado with Rev. Jacob Henley, Rev. Sam Roberts and Rev. Stella Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veteran Cemetery, Dunbar. Friends may call from 10 to 11:00 am prior to the funeral service.
