Matthew Lee Humphries

Matthew Lee Humphries, 48, of Nitro, passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, April 27th. He was born August 8th, 1976 and attended schools in Dunbar and Hurricane, WV. He was employed as a commercial painter at FLSmidth in Winfield and he loved his craft and all of his co-workers. He spoke about them often and how special they were to him. Matt never met a stranger and could start a conversation with anyone. He had strong and dedicated family roots and would help anyone in need. At the age of 11 he was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes and always championed the words “I might have diabetes, but it doesn’t have me”. After years of managing the ups and downs, he recently received an insulin pump and was thrilled with how it worked. He felt sure that it would add years to his life. He is preceded in death by his grandmothers, Mary Alline Mamone, Alma Humphries Lumadue and grandfathers Charles L. Moore, Jr. and Kenneth Humphries. Surviving him is his life partner Laura Humphries, their daughter Hannah and stepson Gavin Harless. Daughter, Josie Cooper of Pliny, WV and sons Owen and Connor Humphries of Red House. Mother and Stepfather, Mary Lynn and Bill Shultz (Charleston), Father and Stepmother Lee and Patricia Humphries (Teays Valley). Also surviving are cousins Jeff and Kristy Moore (Hurricane), Veronica Thornhill (Poca) and Rachel and Michael Fisk (Teays Valley). He will also be missed by his beloved dogs, Gracie, Bishop and his cat Junior. A celebration of Matt’s life will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, 11:00am at Bartlett-Nichols Funeral Home. The family and friends will gather at 10:30am at the funeral home.
