Patrick "Pat" Shanklin Quinlan

Patrick “Pat” Shanklin Quinlan, 78, born June 4, 1948, passed away July 10, 2026, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, WV, with his wife Carolyn and family by his side. Pat was preceded in death by his father and mother, John W. and Madalene M. (Shanklin) Quinlan; his brother John W. “Butch” Quinlan, Jr.; his sister Madalene Christine “Chris” Koel; brother-in-law Richard (Rich) Koel; nephew Johnny Quinlan; and niece Sissy Quinlan. Pat, affectionately known as “PawPaw,” leaves a legacy of love with his cherished wife, Carolyn S (Janney) Quinlan, and his beloved sons and daughters-in-law: Patrick, Jr and Charlotte, Hurricane, WV; Scott and Melanie, Nashville, TN; and Casey and Terran, Morgantown, WV. He also leaves his beloved grandchildren: Amber Quinlan (Jonah) with great grandson Roan Quin Taylor, Richmond, VA; Andrew, Bloomington, IN; Allen, Knoxville, TN; Arika, Morgantown, WV; Connor, Nashville, TN; Camden, Morgantown, WV; Emerson, Morgantown, WV; and Dylan, Morgantown, WV. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael T. “Mike” and Jan, Saint Albans; Kevin T. and Jennifer, Sissonville; brother-in-law and wife, Daniel J and Karen Janney, Cross Lanes, WV; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. Pat was proud of his family and loved them beyond measure. He enjoyed his years playing baseball at Billy Dunn Field for Saint Albans Eastern (SAE) little league. He went on to coach and manage Chandlers, IGA, and Super Value in the SAE little league for 18 years (1979-1997). He coached his son Scott to a city championship, multiple league champions, two all-star teams, and one undefeated season. Pat was a proud member of the Kanawha Southern Board and served for 26 years as a certified basketball official (1987-2013) and continued his support of the board after his retirement. He was privileged to officiate two girls’ basketball state tournaments and numerous girls’ and boys’ games throughout the state at all levels. Pat also volunteered as a little league and high school baseball umpire for several years and umpired a little league state all-star tournament in the Kanawha Valley. He volunteered his time as a basketball coach at Highlawn Elementary for three years. Pat volunteered for many years as the PA announcer for the Saint Albans Red Raiders youth football team, the McKinley Jr. High Trojans, and several state high school girls’ softball championship tournaments. For 20 years, Pat was the voice of the SA Red Dragon football team. He attended Saint Francis Catholic School, was a Saint Albans Junior High Eagle, and a Saint Albans High School Red Dragon. Pat was a model employee for his father, John W. Quinlan, manager of Heck’s Department Store in Saint Albans from the age of 15 to college graduation. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia State College where he served two years in the Junior ROTC program. He worked for the State of WV in various departments for 42 Years. He retired in 2011 from the Department of Administration. Pat proudly served in the Army Reserve as part of the 261st Ordinance Company based in South Charleston and Cross Lanes, West Virginia for 22 years. He retired as Chief Warrant Officer 3 (CW3). Pat served his community as a Saint Albans Ward 8 elected city councilman for five years (2016-2020). He was also a proud member of the Saint Albans Sports Hall of Fame committee for five years. He was a lifetime WVU fan. An avid runner, he completed the Charleston Distance Run under the time he had set for himself. He also completed the Huntington marathon. Pat enjoyed dancing with his wonderful wife Carolyn, and spent many years playing canasta on New Year’s Eve with his wife and friends Donna and Jerry Johnson. PawPaw will be dearly missed and remembered by his family, friends and community for his love and support. Visitation will be Monday July 13, 2026 at Saint Albans High School Commons Area, 2100 Kanawha Terrace, St. Albans from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday July 14, 2026 at Bartlett-Nichols Funeral Home located at 409 Sixth Ave., Saint Albans, WV 25177.
