Harold L. Matthews, 79, of Nitro passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at Hubbard Hospice House, West, South Charleston. He was born in Pliny to the late Alvin Guy and Sylvia Bowcott Matthews. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte D. Matthews; granddaughter, Katrina Godbey; brothers, Robert, Joseph, William and Ronnie Matthews. Harold was retired from the State of West Virginia. He graduated from Nitro High School, class of 1958 and was a member of the Nitro Fire Department. He was a US Army veteran and served with 82nd Airborne. He volunteered a lot of his time coaching midget football and baseball for the Nitro League. Surviving are his children, Lisa Matthews Godbey of Nitro; sons, Mike Matthews of St. Albans and Craig Matthews (Jennifer) of Hurricane; sister, Sharon Miller of Nitro. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Travis, Tyler, Andrew, Kelli, Katherine and Rebecca. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Bartlett-Nichols Funeral Home, St. Albans with Pastor Mike Jarrett officiating. Burial will be in Bowcott Cemetery, Pliny.
