Barion "Barney" Ray Casebolt

Barion Ray “Barney” Casebolt, 86, of St. Albans, departed this life April 30, 2018 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington after a long illness. He was born on January 12, 1932 in Riverside, Kanawha County, to the late James E. Casebolt, Sr., and Carrie Opal Ramsey Casebolt. Barney was the youngest of four children. He was a graduate of Poca High School, Class of 1949 and attended Morris Harvey College, West Virginia State College, and Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. After high school, he was employed at American Viscose Corporation in Nitro and Carbide Tech Center in South Charleston. His army service, 1952-1954, was in Germany. In 1961, he moved to Washington, D.C. and worked in several agencies of the Department of Defense, including the Defense Mapping Agency and The Oceanographic Office for over 30 years. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, James E. “Jim” Casebolt, Jr.; sisters, Mary Ann Casebolt and Sarah Jannette Board; nephew, Russell “Sonny” Board, Jr. He is survived by his nieces, Judy Ann Roberts (Ron) of Eleanor, Sharon Kay Swope (Ansis) of Nitro; great-nieces, Sherry Pauline (Tim) of Mobile, Alabama, Laura Young (Jeremy) of Marshall, Michigan; great-nephews, Chris Roberts (Katie) of Huntington, Shane Roberts (Lindsey) of Red House; great-great nieces, Linda and Leia Young and Eleighna Roberts; great-great nephews, Logan, Grayson and Thomas Roberts and Dillon, Wyatt and Myles Pauline. Barney was a highly intelligent man, an avid reader and artist. He enjoyed music, movies, tennis and hunting. He was a fan of WVU football and basketball. He was like a second father to his nieces and nephew. He had a wonderful sense of humor and could always make you laugh. He was a soft spoken, compassionate man who supported many benevolent groups. He believed in the sanctity of life and desired that the ugliness in the world be overcome by kindness. He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. A celebration of Barney’s life will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, May 7, 2018 at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans with Chris Roberts and Shane Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans with military honors. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
