Donna Aileen Lewis Bird

On April 20, 2026, Donna Aileen Lewis Bird, 86, of St. Albans, ran into the loving arms of Jesus after winning a courageous 73-year-battle with juvenile diabetes. Born on September 15, 1939, to Clarence Edward and Ruby Elizabeth Lewis of St. Albans, Donna lived her entire life on Browns Creek Road on the western side of St. Albans. Donna attended Robinson School on Browns Creek, Fairview School in St. Albans, and St. Albans High School, from where she graduated in 1957. She worked as an attendance clerk at St. Albans High School from 1960 until 1970 when she chose to be a stay-at-home mother to her only child, Amy. Later in life, Donna babysat numerous children and had a tremendous influence on their lives. Donna was a member of Browns Creek Church of God her entire life, and she served as the church pianist for over 70 years. Donna loved working with her house plants, herb garden, and various crafts. One of her favorite past times was sitting on her front porch swing and waving to family and friends as they drove by her house. She loved Jesus, her family, and her life and did not allow her childhood disease to dim her faithfulness, her testimony, her kindness, her smile, or her happiness. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Donna was preceded in death by her husband Darrell Creed Bird, her parents Clarence and Ruby Lewis, her step-mother Marge Lewis, her in-laws: Noah and Alma Bird, Helen Roberts Bird, Baxter and Roma Bird, and her sister-in-love Sandra Kay Lewis, as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-love, Amy D. and Mark W. Halstead, of Winfield; her brothers, Larry Edward Lewis of St. Albans, and Garry Eugene Lewis and his wife, Joyce, of Nitro; her step-brother, David Lewis and his wife Judy of St. Albans; her nephews: Bill Bird of St. Albans, Larry Edward Lewis, II and his wife Melissa of Hurricane, and Brian Phillip Lewis of Brownsberg, Indiana; nieces: Debra Bird Jarvis of Scott Depot and Beth Lewis Carter of Dunbar, as well as numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Donna’s extraordinary medical team: Samar Sankari, M.D., endocrinologist; Kristie Hensley, M.D., family practitioner; Sangeeta Mandapaka, M.D., cardiologist; Michael Noto, D.P.M.; podiatrist; Muhib Tarakji, M.D., ophthalmologist; and Kara Dravenstott, FNP, rheumatology. The family would like to send an extra-special thank-you to Jonathan Zuniga, M.D., Rein Zuniga, CNP, and the staff of Fresenius Kidney Care of Hurricane for their exceptional care of Donna during the last four years, the most challenging period of her life. She loved ALL of you! We do not know what we would have done without you. Visitation will be Thursday, April 23rd from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Bartlett-Nichols Funeral Home in St. Albans. Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., with visitation from noon – 1:00 p.m., on Friday, April 24th, at Browns Creek Church of God, St. Albans with the Rev. Larry McCallister, Jr. officiating.
