Ronald R. Holmes

Ronald R. Holmes, 81 of Sissonville grasped the hand of his eternal savior, Sweet Jesus as he lovingly called him for his trip to Glory on Monday morning, September 8, 2025. Ronald was a long-time member and Deacon at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church. The past year, Ronald/Dad/Pawpaw/Pops had toiled with the wretched affliction of Dementia and the complications of a stroke on top. Never known to slow down and always being jittery, Ronald was a long-time public servant. He retired as a Captain from a lengthy career with the Charleston Fire Department. Owned and operated Certified Oil Station on Rt. 21 in Sissonville. He delivered milk for Valley Bell and Bonham’s Diary. He even worked at Union Carbide and Hertz Rental Car early in his adult life, Experiencing the glorious glimpses of his eternal life, Ronald knew that our mom was waiting to meet him as he reached the celestial shore of Heaven. Ann (Randolph) Holmes was awaiting her husband of 32 years. Also waiting on their “Baby” was his parents Rev. Albert and Estella Thaxton Holmes. The Holmes’ are a large family, so his brothers Lawerence, James, Clifford, Elwood and Lennis “Buddy” were waiting with his sisters Mary Thaxon and Edith Lacy for their baby brother. Surviving Ronald are brother Kenneth (Betty) of Diamond and Elizabeth Bostick of Campbell’s Creek. Of course, this man left us with a difficult legacy that we can only hope to fill. He was our hero and mentor; It’s me and my brother now. Ronald leaves an enduring legacy for his two sons to follow. His never-ending pride for them, Mark (Kathy) of Charleston with their son Rev. Randy Campbell, whom Ronald stood steadfastly behind as his first and only Deacon in Randy’s pastorship at Elizabeth Baptist and Scott (Tracy) of Sissonville. Pawpaw was tough on their daughters Danielle Asbury and Brooke Kelly as he strictly enforced the procedures of waking up and getting to school on time many mornings. Ronald’s grandson Dakota came along, and we all knew our days of being spoiled were going to be short. 8 great grandchildren were able to meet Ronald to call him pawpaw. He also had several loving nephews and nieces, but two could be called his favorite, Pam Thaxton Parsons and Regina Thaxton Huffman. We have been lucky to have had many good and loving people to cross our paths in life. We would thank our extended family of the nurses and staff of Cedar Ridge Nursing Home and Kanawha Valley Hospice for their compassion and care throughout the last year in assisting us with Dad’s struggles with the torment of dementia and his final preparations for his eternal destiny. We also want to thank everyone that has offered a hug, a prayer, a smile or a compassionate offering. Funeral services will be at Elizabeth Baptist Church 2550 Wolf Pen Drive in Sissonville. The family will accept friends on Wednesday evening, September 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 and one hour prior to service on Thursday. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m. with his grandson, Rev. Randy Campbell officiating. Burial will be alongside his beloved wife Ann in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens in Cross Lanes.
